Audio Systems Engineer

Audio Systems Engineer

Facebook Reality Labs | Redmond, WA

Facebook Reality Labs has embarked on an ambitious mission to build the next computing platform in augmented and virtual reality systems. Our goals are to eliminate distance, make people smarter and more productive, replace physical objects, and give people the tools to feel more connected any time and anywhere. We believe that a key component of this mission is to improve and enhance human hearing. We are looking for an exceptional audio systems engineer to join our growing interdisciplinary team in Redmond, WA, working to solve difficult problems at the intersection of hearing, acoustics, mechanical design, auditory perception, spatial audio and signal processing. In this position, you will collaborate closely with a cross-functional team of engineers, research scientists, and experience designers to advance the technical readiness of novel audio technologies. You will focus on integrating the latest audio technologies to a larger AR/VR system to create new experiences beyond what traditional consumer audio devices are capable of and prove the experiential value and product viability. The role requires a background in acoustic system engineering, algorithm integration, algorithm tuning, and audio performance testing.

Responsibilities

  • Prototype an end-to-end audio signal chain on embedded systems
  • Tune algorithms that are built in-house and by external partners to deliver optimized audio-focused user experience to pass performance goals
  • Design and conduct acoustic benchmark tests to evaluate the subjective and objective performance of advanced audio systems, applying the end-to-end understanding of audio hardware and software subsystems
  • Provide subject matter expertise in assessing third-party audio solutions, critically reviewing the performance of solutions presented

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Acoustics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering
  • 2+ years of industry experience in audio consumer electronics or audio technology development
  • Knowledge of real-time audio signal processing algorithms such as ANC, noise suppression, echo cancellation, EQ, speaker protection, or beamformer, and experience with their hardware implementation
  • Knowledge of end-to-end analog and digital signal path through an audio system and its components including transducers, ADC, DSP, DAC, and amplifier
  • Experience designing, setting up, and executing audio tests using audio measurement and testing platforms such as SoundCheck, ACQUA, Audio Precision
  • Experience of independently bringing up silicon evaluation boards and relevant tuning interfaces
  • Experience with MATLAB or Python to control acoustic tests and analyze data
  • Experience in designing and performing acoustic experiments in controlled laboratory setting
  • Experience working in a cross-functional environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience of system engineer role catering to embedded platforms
  • Experience shipping an audio consumer electronics device as a systems engineer
  • Demonstrated experience of implementing and tuning adaptive audio algorithms
  • Demonstrated experience with audio algorithms for hearing correction and enhancement
  • Demonstrated experience of implementing real-time audio models on Simulink RealTime, AudioWeaver, or MaxMSP
  • Experience designing and implementing objective audio performance tests
  • Experience in speech quality metrics
